Staying On Track Over Lockdown

Grounding - Living in the present

With a lot of the world back in lockdown number 2 and the world just being a strange place to live in at the moment, its important to just take a step back.

Over the next couple of days after you read this blog, take yourself out of your normal regime and day to day life of; working, social media, watching tv, speaking to others and even training, to slow down for just 5-10 minutes and really take in what we are thankful for and put things into perspective to make yourself more productive and to relieve some stress.

Just find a quiet space, outside ideally, where you can just sit and listen to the world with your own thoughts and live in the present. Too many of us at this moment in time are stressing about things we just cannot control.

Doing so can be a form of grounding or meditation, where you can process certain aspects of your life and the stresses you may have. It could be that you are looking to find a second income to keep money coming, you work as a key worker and find yourself burning out or you have been furloughed and your mental health just isn't in a good place.

We all have struggles and difficulties, some worse than others, but you know what?

We will all get through this if we have the right mindset and outlook of what we need to do, to get that second income, to wake up for another shift helping people in need or to give you that bit of motivation you need, to workout or learn something new.

You will feel a sense of composure and focus after just taking 5-10 minutes out of your day to feel in control. It clears the mind, gets you to focus on the important things in life and motivates you to kick on and achieve something each day, no matter how small.

Reducing stress and being more productive

Along with implementing some quiet time, there is another small tool that you can use to help get some clarity on your day and to give you some direction, so that you can be more productive.

We all have times where we have a list of 100 things that need to be done and sometimes we just don't know where to start because we feel so overwhelmed. This can cause us to be even more unproductive and anxious, where we end up getting very little, to nothing at all done.

When you wake up in the morning all you need to do is draw a cross with 4 headings. (See Below)

Urgent Not Urgent
Important Not Important

Under these 4 heading you just implement all the things that need to be done that day in order of importance.

This just gets you to process what really needs to be done today and what can potentially wait till tomorrow. This just gets that huge list out of your head and down onto paper so you can process tasks easier and start to work towards the things that are urgent.

For example:

Under URGENT you may have:

- Finish off an assignment that needs to be handed in that day

- Workout

- Wash clothes for work in the evening

Under NOT URGENT you may have:

- Meal prep

- Buy a birthday card for a family member for 3 days time

Under IMPORTANT you may have:

- Pay your car insurance for 5 days time

- Research for new side income

Under NOT IMPORTANT you may have:

- Hover your house

- Pay off credit card for 10 days time

As you can see by putting things in order of importance it gives you a clearer picture of what needs to be done now and what can wait, all of these tasks are important, but some more that others.

To give yourself less stress and to make you more productive, try using this tool the next time you feel so overwhelmed with things to do.
